Please help me with plant id

swjonthebay(8b Alabama)July 22, 2013

I noticed this plant growing/blooming on our bulkhead yesterday. The plant itself is about 10-12"tall and doesn't look like anything I've ever planted. I have searched Alabama wildflower pictures today and so far have had no luck in seeing anything like it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, Nelson, that does help and I thank you.

I had assumed it was a wildflower because I'd been seeing something very similar in a ditch near my place of work. But now it looks like maybe those are something that escaped a garden :)

This little plant seems to be very happy in what is really no more than sand over rocks.
