oak leaves on daylily beds

royboy210August 12, 2008

I am in Prattville, AL and would like to know if oak leaves would be good to use as mulch in daylily beds. Also, has anyone used the alfalfa tablets that you buy at Wal Mart in the vitamin aisle as fertilizer on daylilies and/or roses? I do not want to use alfalfa pellets(horse feed) due to the smell.

I am by no means an expert on mulching/composting, etc., but I started using ground oak leaf mulch a couple of years ago throughout my flowerbeds, and I can't say enough good things about it. It breaks down quickly and enriches the soil, all while helping to retain moisture.

Oak leaves are free, readily available every fall, time-tested and approved by Mother Nature!

Thanks, Nelson, for the reply. Plan to add the oak leaves to all my beds this fall too.
