Garlic basics

creativeexile(z6MI)March 30, 2005

I'm looking to plant a bit of garlic around my roses for insect control (not necessarily harvesting). Question is, do you just take garlic from your kitchen and put it in the ground?? I have some garlic in my fridge forming green tops right now (so I won't be cooking with them). I understand it's best to plant them in the fall, but alas. It's March, and I'm working on my rose beds.

How tall can I expect the garlic to grow? I saw a reference to a 2' tall garlic plant, that's taller than my roses!

Just some basics for a newbie, please. Thanks in advance.

Two feet tall is about normal for what you probably have. That would be a softneck variety if purchased from the supermarket. Could be worse. Some hardnecks will go over six feet tall!

Plant as soon as possible, single cloves about 6 to 8 inches apart and about an inch or so deep. If planted any time from now to the end of April, you can still expect to get decent bulbs in return.

now, is there a direction or "top or bottom" of the clove that needs to face up? please pardon my lack of knowledge.

the pointy end goes up, and the fat end goes down. Like when I sit down in a chair.

Garlic is easy to grow but it won't prevent insects on roses. Sad, but true.

Wont prevent true, but does seem to subdue the infestation. At least for me.
