Storm is comming! Garlic ?

nutmeg002March 27, 2007

Hi, this is my first year growing garlic. I have a nice small bed of hardneck varieties that made it nicley through the winter and are about 8 inches tall. We are getting a late winter storm tonight with 6 to 8 inches of snow expected and about 29 degree weather. Should I run out and add a bunch of straw mulch, it has some around the base but everything has grown up through it. Thanks for any suggestions!

Garlic should pretty much laugh at a few inches of snow - the worst I'd guess is that you might get just a bit of browning on the tips. My garlic has been through -5 uncovered this winter and is just emerging from the 1 1/2 feet of snow we got on the 17th and it's there's only little leaf burn and they will grow out of it as soon as the ground unfreezes enough.
