Onion question

patty4150(SoCal)April 23, 2006

When I plant onion sets I get nice onions in a couple months.

When I plant onion seeds however, I never get nice bulbs. Right now, my 1 year plants (from seeds, planted last summer) are about an inch in diameter at the base, the leaves are dying, some are sending up seed heads, and none have a bulb.

Is this normal when you grow from onion seed? How do I get them to make bulbs?

You do understand that there are long day onions, short day and intermediate day length onions? You are in the short day area and need to plant the correct onion for your area.
Use the link to find short day varities that should grow for you. Try two ot three to see which will do best.
