Newbie Onion Grower

cojenJune 17, 2006

I feel silly asking this but I just want to be sure....

When the onions are growing (red onions), is the bulb supposed to be under the soil or above?

Thank you so much.

The bigger the bulb gets, the more it will be above the soil level. If you have a sunburn problem you can hill them up with loose soil. Likely not a problem in your zone. The bulb has to be free to expand.

We have very intense sun here. Our summer days are usually 95-104. Thank you for your info. I just wasn't sure if they needed to be above ground. I know my green onions are different but I just let those grow, never did anything to them but eat them. :)
