Can anyone tell me what this is and if its safe to eat. Found them in the neighbors unkempt yard. Blossom looks like a chive, root and bulb smell a little like onion. Single bulb, stem and flower.
It looks like garlic to me.. that bulb shape more like an immature head of garlic than an onion (onions tend to be more spherical). The smell is my only reservation.
Cut the bulb in half and see if it smells like an onion or garlic.
Either way it's definitely an allium member.
Chives have similar flowers. I have never seen garlic flower. ALSO flowering onions (alliums) have similar flowers but more globe shaped.
But, the stem and flower should not be edible because it is woody. But if you find other chives around, they could be edible.
Difference between Chive and Allium:
Chives have tubular growth/leaves but alliums have flat leaves.
