Do You Grow Anything After Garlic?

achang89(Z6)July 17, 2013

Garlic has a relatively short growing season and it can be harvested in early summer. Do you grow 2nd crop after the garlic? Or you just want the land to rest for next year?

If you do crop rotation, then this would cause some problem with other vegetables or whatever you grow in your garden.

I always plant stuff after I harvest my garlic. There is plenty of time to plant cool season veggies for harvest in the fall.

And I also rotate my garlic. All it takes is a little planning beforehand. Where I plant my cool season veggies in the spring, I plant garlic in the fall. And where the garlic is in spring/early summer, I plant cool season veggies for fall. Of course, I add compost between plantings.

I have something planned for the garlic space the day the crop comes out. I started butternut squash seedlings and plugged them in after the early turbans, and now they will run over the space vacated by the later varieties.

In another row of full-season hardnecks, I'm planting brussels sprouts, rutabagas, broccoli and cabbage. When I'm undecided, I throw down some buckwheat and let it grow until I have a plan.

I used to harvest my garlics in June. But I would dig some garlics early(in May) and plan a pepper/eggplant seedling there. So by harvest times peppers/eggplants were not very big and did not bother the garlics.
