garlic novice zone 5?

lolear(5b - Chicago)August 10, 2010

I would like to add garlic to my urban backyard garden. Looking for some general advice and recommendations. My only available space at this point is under my asian pear trees. They would get good light in the spring but as the trees leaf out would get somewhat less. Cold winters/hot summers. I mainly use garlic for cooking, hardly ever eat it raw. Interested in a type that would store well. Any particular varieties? What is a good quantity to plant? I cook a lot but only for 2. Any special growing requirements? Plant them late summer to fall?

Thanks for the help!

Laura, We could tell you a bunch of facts about how much light it needs and what kind we like but your best bet is to google "how to grow garlic" and read everything you can about it. Many growers also have some instruction on their sites. After reading all that come back with a specific question..those are much easier to answer

At this link are a few pages describing the process.

Note: Left side of main page has different sections.

I had pretty good luck my first year, which just ended, using those basic instructions. :)
