onion and garlic sets in Central VA

jollyrd(Richmond VA)September 1, 2010

I guess it is that time of the year when we all try to order or buy for fall planting. So, what online sources do you rely for your orders?

If you are in Central VA or can comment on my area - what type/name of onions and garlic should I order?

I have raised beds and add compost in fall.

Thank you

If I were you, I'd check out Southern Exposure Seed Exchange which is out of Mineral, VA. They specialize in organic, open-pollinated and heirloom seeds.

Maybe someone closer to your location can comment on varieties of onions and garlic that grow well in your area.

I ordered some from Southern Exposure but haven't gotten the shipment yet. Last year I bought a head of garlic at farmers market and planted it with very good result. Around northern VA, I see quite a few named varieties sold at farmers market. Since the farms are local, the garlic they grow will generally do very well.

@ $24 lb they better plant themselves...that's insane to charge that much and screw over the small grower. IMO. Checking out the local farmers is a better idea. This "certified organic" foofoo is crap, It doesn't matter if it was grown with horse poop or out of a bag of triple 16...you're planting it right? The plant doesn't know the difference anyway. I recently saw a seed company selling Nootka Rose bulbs, the certified organic was $3 more per pound than the regular ones..people please stop it.
