Hippeastrum and nectar production

misss(5b)February 12, 2012

I know that Hippeastrum Papilio and Exotic Star produce nectar. I have not seen this occur in the Dutch hybrids. I was wondering if you all could help me and name the Hippies that do produce nectar. Is it just the species or are there hybrids that do this as well, other than Exotic Star?

Please list those Hippeastrum that produce nectar.

Thank you.

The "cybister" hybrids produce copious amounts of nectar.

Are there any 'species' other than Papilio that produce nectar?
That is a very nice image of 'Chico's' nectar production. Mine shall bloom next week, I hope. It is interesting that all cybister's do this. Do they have a common parent?
Also, I noticed that Papilio produces more nectar towards eary evening. Has anyone else noticed this occurance?

Hi Misss,

Yes, all Cybister hybrids were developed from the South American species H. Cybister.

'Lima' being a first generation hybrid with Hippeastrum papilio and Hippeastrum chico was no doubt to inherit copious amounts of nectar!
