Why is my yellow hibiscus sprouting orange blooms?

goldie11January 14, 2014

I've had a potted yellow hibiscus for several years. Last week, it sprouted a beautiful orange bloom. Is that normal? There is an orange hibiscus about 20 feet away and a couple of red and white ones elsewhere in the yard.

Neat! Some hibiscus plants make flowers that are one color in winter and another in summer, so that may be what's happening with yours. OR it could be a spontaneous mutation too, or even a seedling or growth from under stock if your hibiscus was grafted like many roses are (most hibiscus are not graft though). Either way, it sounds like a fun surprise! Enjoy! Let us know if you see more, and/if they return to yellow in summer. Happy gardening!
