To fertilize or not Acacia

enderwiggin30February 18, 2013

I have Acacia salicina and saligna trees. I have read that Acacias are not supposed to be fertilized. The ground is not amended and I am worried that they are not getting enough nutrients.
Do you fertilize your Acacia trees ?

No need to fertilize acacia trees. They are in the legume (bean) family and are able to 'make' nitrogen through a symbiotic relationship with a bacteria in the soil. They are very well adapted to our soils and shouldn't need any additional fertilizer. I never fertilize mine.

FYI, per studies at U of A the soil does not need to be amended to trees. shrubs or groundcovers.

Yup, I agree with AZtreelvr as usual, I wouldn't fertilize them either. They're fun trees for sure! Good luck and keep us posted. Happy gardening!

Thanks. They are from moon valley nurseries and 10 feet tall.. Hope they will grow into the soil around them. Is there a nursery that sells mesquite trees 5 gallon type.
