will basella alba fertilize basella rubra or vice versa?

merrybookwyrmOctober 10, 2013

This may be a stupid question, but I can't seem to find an answer on google.

Will white-stemmed malabar spinach cross breed with or fertilize red-stemmed malabar spinach? Or vice versa?

I have a white-stemmed malabar spinach that grows in the house year round and makes its own seeds that grow new white-stemmed malabar spinach for planting outside.

I recently acquired a red-stemmed malabar spinach. When it flowers, does it need to be kept a distance from the white-stemmed malabar spinach to prevent it from crossing with the white-stemmed malabar? Or will it only fertilize the seeds of another red-stemmed malabar? And vice versa.

Thank you.
