Laotian or Cambodian tree with edible flowers

baci(z10Ca)October 9, 2006

I saw a tree today that grows along the streets of Laos or Cambodia  I believe Cambodia. The flowers of this tree are used in soup to create a sour flavor. The tree looked like a mimosa, & I believe the name was bak cao. Does anyone have any idea of what this tree might be? The flowers are sometimes sold in Asian markets.

I think the tree might be tamarind. If anyone has heard of any recipes of using flowers in soup, I would appreciate any information. Thanks.
