my sister inlaw is planning on getting rid of some plants in her garden and asked if i wanted any. she has 2-3 small Azaleas and 2 small Rhododendrons. is it ok to dig them up and transplant them this time of the year?

Yes. Just keep them watered until the ground freezes. Protecting them with a burlap screen and/or Wiltpruf is also a good idea.
