moso culms

gardensnail22January 31, 2009

I have a 5 to 6 yr old patch of Moso. It has been doing great. My husband fertilized about 3 weeks ago with amonium nitrate(spelling?) and he pruned heavily the small old canes. Now I have some very large culms coming up. They are at least 3 inches. We are going to have plenty more freezes. I think maybe it was to early to fertilize. Are my culms goinng to freeze? Did we do the wrong thing by pruning? will post picture later. Jane

You can prune out undesirable culms at any time. However, you do not want to be fertilizing -- and thus encouraging new growth -- until later on in spring when you don't have to worry about freezes. If you get another freeze, it's likely that you will lose these new shoots. Maybe if they're not too tall when that happens, and you mulch heavily, you could improve the survival rate.

How much one is supposed to fertilize moso or any other bamboo in (lb/square-yard/year)?
