bamboo growing wild in Columbia PA

the_roaming_gnome(z6 northern pa)January 17, 2007

This summer I was visting some friends in Columbia Pennsylvania, I noticed a very large grove of bamboo growing near his home. After I realized what it was (I had never seen a bamboo grove prior to that) I noticed that the stuff was growing wild all over the area. Its height was about 25 feet and it was very attractive. I have been wanting to plant a running bamboo on my property for some time-but no nurseries in this area sell it and I didnt want to pay expensive shipping fees. Needless to say I dug some up and brought it home. I am hoping that someone from that area of PA can tell me what cultivar it might be. It is definately a runner, about 25 feet tall, the groves were very dense, the largest culms were at least 1-1/4" diameter, I do no know what zone Columbia is in. I am in 5b and so far the temperatures have gone down as low as 2 degrees (only for one night) and the plant has suffered no ill effects. Any help on the identification will be greatly appreciated

thanks

There are a number of things it could be, and without a picture I can't be sure of its identity. However, with a few questions we can narrow it down.

Does it have yellow stripes down the culms?

Does it look like this?

if so its Phyllostachys aureosulcata. Otherwise it is probably still a Phyllostachys. Take a look at http://bambooweb.info/Plants.php and scroll down to the Phyllostachys section and start looking at the photos. Good luck with your divisions. I'd keep them indoors until Spring arrives.

I agree with Brian. Most likely its the common bamboo out east, yellow groove, Phyllostachys aureosulcata. Look for a yellow sulcus to be sure.

It is probably yellow groove bamboo.

Lately I have done much work in talking to plan growers and such.

Most of this type of bamboo can be found growing around the
Allentown area.

Yellow Groove is the heartiest types that can grow in PA.

It will loose it's leaves but it will grow and take over an area if you let it.

I know many areas where this type grows.
It is the most common.

I hope this helped you.
