WANTED: banana for potting

tickledmink(z5 MI)March 18, 2006

Ok I am a northener who wants to grow a banana plant...this would be so cool for my grandkids to see how bananas grow. I don't know if it is possible so would need lots of advice on this subject. I could keep it outside all summer and bring it indoors in the winter. I am fairly new to gardening and have a couple things to offer in return...

thornless raspberries

a couple asparagus roots (2 year roots)

lots of nanking bush cherry seedlings, 1-3 years old

I really hope I can get someone who will be willing to teach me and my grandkids all about bananas. TIA Kim

Hi, I have a Basjoo Banana that is cold hardy for all 50 states. It can stay out all year round if mulched well in the colder states. It can withstand temps at below 0 when mulched. It will die back in the winter so would need to be cut back to about a foot or two after the first freeze. It will come back from the roots the next year when the temps warm up. It gets about 18 feet tall and produces a banana but it is not an edible banana. It is very fibrous but very much a conversation piece. Don't know if you would be interested or not in this type or not.
