Bamboo in Lrage Container?

texas_grrl(8)March 13, 2008

I'm new to gardening. I would love to have some bamboo but the invasiveness prevent me from wanting it in my garden.

Is it possible to grow it in a large container? If so, are there varieties that would be well-suited?

just get a clumping variety. They will be easier to keep under control. There are two types, one is clumping, and the other running/spreading....

You can grow many bamboo in containers. However, they are not happy for more than a couple of years before they have to be divided, they will be impossible to get out of the container if it has other than a standard vase shape, and they are usually much healthier looking and hardier when in the ground. Many people, myself included, grow bamboo in the ground and just do rhizome pruning as needed each year to keep it in check. As pointed out, you could start with a clumper. That might help you become less intimidated by the plant, and even venture into planting running bamboo some day.

I'm in zone 8b in Texas, and I have several varieties that are clumpers growing in my yard and they are NOT invasive.

How big/tall of a bamboo are you looking for?

How much space are you willing to give the bamboo to grow in?
