Bamboo recommendations? Bambusa multiplex? Thamnocalamus?

smokingpencilsMarch 7, 2007

My lovely screening hedge of Pseudosasa japonica bloomed this winter, so replanting is on the schedule. I'd prefer to replant a clumper rather than a runner but I'm having no luck in finding info on varieties that can take the winter cold and the summer heat.

Some sources indicate that Bambusa multiplex should do well in this area (zone 7b Chapel Hill, NC) but others don't rate it hardy enough for winter temps.

How about Thamnocalamus tessellatus? Anyone have experience with this one? If so, can it tolerate 3/4 sun exposure?

Any other suggestions from experience bamboo folk? I'm rather disheartened by asking at nurseries and getting the same reply,"Why would anyone want to plant bamboo!"

All advice will be appreciated - also sources for recommendations!
