I went to a specialty nursury near me and they had a bamboo marked 'chocolate Bamboo'. I have never heard of it, have you?
Many bamboo have common names, but I've never heard of that one, and it just sounds like something made up last week by a marketing person. The test will be if you ask for the scientific name of the species...if they can't tell you, I'd question the competence of the nursery. It's even possible that it's not really bamboo, but some bamboo-like plant. Or was it something edible for Easter baskets?
I am guessing that they are mis labeling a p. nigra (black bamboo) or like kudzu says, the marketing dept is getting wild and crazy!
I am sure you are right. I am going to go over there this weekend and check it out.
I have heard someone here long ago, call Lako 'chocolate' bamboo, but don't think they found it labeled that way. They called it that because it's culms become chocolate in colour with age.
Borinda Fungosa. Medium size clumper.
See URL link for further info.

Yep, It's called 'Borinda Fungosa, chocolate'. Clumping, fountain like bamboo. Does best in part shade, good drainage. Gets appox 15'.
Borinda Fungosa, can it tolerate high heat(100F+) and humidity?
LA gets coastal winds in the Pm so it shd do ok as long as it gets shade in the Am. Rgds
