Bamboo For Roofdeck

jenniepea(7)April 6, 2007

I'm hoping someone can provide a suggestion for my question:

I am looking to grow bamboo in containers on my roof deck. I'm hoping to create some sort of screen to block an unpleasant part of the roof. The area gets a good amount of sun most of the day. It can also get windy, though. What kind of 'boo can I grow in containers for zone 7?

Thanks so much for your time.

Pseudosasa japonica (arrow bamboo)....
It does well in pots, is suited for your zone, can take a good bit of wind and is very tropical looking.

The problem is overwintering that bamboo on your roof. There is BIG difference between life in a container and in the ground. The same bamboo that is perfectly hardy in your area in the ground will have much bigger challenge in a container. In a mild winter, you shouldn't have a problem, I am betting you would in a typical zone 7 winter. If you could protect the container and the foliage from the winter winds it would help.
