Question about Musa Basjoos in Zone 8

diana55(z8a)March 23, 2007

I was wondering if anyone knows, if I should mulch my Musa Basjoo's, in this zone? The winter's are pretty mild here in Vancouver British Columbia, but we do get some frost.Or should I dig the corms up and let them go dormant? Thanks!!! Diana55

There is a fine line between the occaisional frost and hard freezes, which can occur when the temps get into the mid to low 20's ( hard freeze ). Your basjoo corms will do just fine in zone 8. As for the banana stalk itself, you may lose at least half of that.

I am in zone 8-coastal SC. My basjoos have done really well. Little or no damage and even had a january bloom this year. It was killed in feb, but they do well.
