Bugs eating my bamboo fence!

watergreat(z10 CA)April 5, 2009

I've made a fence out of ddried pieces of giant timber bamboo (which I cut down from my yard and dried). The fence looks great, but the bamboo is being slowly eaten by some kind of bug. I can see tiny pinholes in the bamboo and what looks like fine sawdust (presumably from the bugs chomping on the bamboo). After a while there's almost no bamboo left and it will literally crumble in your hand (and then you'll have this fine sawdust all over you). Any ideas what kind of bug is doing this? And more importantly, what can I do to keep it from happening? (I've tried staining the bamboo to make it a little more diffcult for the bugs to get into the wood, but realistically this isn't going to work because there's always a few cracks in the bamboo and the open top or bottom, etc. Please help! Thanks very much.

I would have this professionally checked out, if it is Powder Post Beetles they can do a substantial amount of damage to a home.
