Potting medium for hippeastrum epiphytes?

rredbbeard(SE CT USA/zone 6)April 2, 2014

Besides h.aulicum, which species are regarded as epiphytic, and what potting mediums have produced the best results for you? There doesn't appear to be a concise listing of this information.

I have year-old seedlings of h.aulicum that started well in a 'parfait' of scoria and perlite plus some organic potting material, but are ready to repot now. I'm inclined to use either orchid bark, or straight scoria in a terra cotta pot.

What have you used for evansiae, iguazuanum, parodii, neopardinum, etc?

I grow papilio as an epiphyte, plaqued on a cedar board. Roots covered in sphagnum moss only. Also a cross between H. pap & H aul in a coco basket with "Orchid Mix" as substrate.

I've never seen slabbed hippeastrums. Can you post pictures?
I'm thinking I may put some of my aulicum seedlings on planks. How would h.teyucuarensis or other species do with this method?

Thanks,

Robert,

Here is the link for Pat's method of mounting H. papilio. I've never forgotten that thread and his photos! I wish it was a feasible way for me to grow them.
