I was wondering if anyone had recomendations for a bamboo that could survive in kansas in a pot on a deck with moderate light?

Are you planning to bring it in each winter? Your Zone is pretty close to the practical limits of bamboo hardiness for in-ground plants, and bamboos in pots are much more vulnerable to the effects of cold and freezing than if they were in the ground.

Most bamboo do quite well in pots. You just need to re-pot every couple of years due to the root system expanding to the edges of the pot and causing the plant to get root-bound. For that reason, you want a vase shaped pot since you will not be able to unpot a bamboo from a pot that recurves (i.e., has a top opening less than the widest diameter of the pot). Also, how tall a bamboo can you handle? Many of them will get pretty tall, even in a pot.
