Controlling suckers

watergal(z6/7 Westminster, MD)May 27, 2006

What is the best way to reduce and remove (permanently) the suckers on my musa basjoo? I'd like to keep it to the main plant, a medium size pup, and maybe one baby. But every time I cut off new pups, I seem to end up with even more. Help, please!

This is probably not what you want to hear but all musas produce pups and I don't think you can stop them from doing so. If you want something that doesn't pup you should be growing ensetes instead.

I grow a lot of nanners in pots cause they take over otherwise. To keep them from pupping I mulch the heck out of them with newspapers. Works MOST of the time.
Or you can just cut them off and trade them off.
