Drying bamboo

ollieroseJune 9, 2008

I have a neighbor that is planning to cut down some bamboo and I'm taking it to make "teepee's" for my vines. How long will it take for the bamboo to dry and how do I need to dry it? Do I need to coat it with anything so it will stand the test of time?

Thanks so much for any help you can provide!

If you're just making a simple structure without complex joints, you can use them immediately. The culms will turn tan over several months, and coating them may slow this down, but bothering to coat bamboo for an outdoor teepee is unnecessary and won't lengthen the life significantly. If the teepees are portable, you can take them in for the winter, as keeping them out of the winter rains/snows will improve their life expectancy.
