Help, Ice Cream and Dwarf Cavendish questions

AranonJune 7, 2013

Hello, I have 2 of the "Ice Cream" variety of bananas and 2 of the "Dwarf Cavendish" variety in large pots on my deck, they receive full sunlight throughout the day. The two "Ice Cream" variety look very healthy and are producing larger leaves with every new bunch however the plants are not growing tall at all, I've had them since early April and really have not much to show for it. This variety is supposed to get very large but I can't seem to get them to grow tall. My "Dwarf Cavendish" variety are putting out larger leaves with every new batch as well but again they aren't getting tall. I checked the soil and it is moist but not super wet. I will say that at night temperatures are in the high 40's to high 50's, I know that wont kill them but is that the reason for their slow growth rate? What temperature do bananas just flat out stop growing?

Each leaf's growth through the pseudostem increases the girth of the plant, and as each leaf clears the one before it, you get height.
Unlike "normal" plants, Tissue Culture bananas take a bit longer to get moving. With no corm and little root, they don't explode in growth the way a pup would while attached to a mother plant.

Got my first tc ICB mid-July last year. It reached about 3 feet or so by this March, but has grown to over 6 feet since then.

Mileage may vary. You might get a lot more growth out of yours if you feed them regularly.
