bamboo 30+ ft tall to grow in shade?

jennchrisJune 20, 2011

I've been reading through older posts and am blown away by the knowledge in this forum. We live along side an apartment building and have a 5' setback where we need a large privacy screen. The screening area is probably about 20 ft long and we need to reach a height of at least 30-35 ft. Much of the area is shaded by the apartment. I know there are running types that would achieve that height, but are root barriers enough to avoid pool plumbing and gas lines? Appreciate any advice.

Bamboo rhizomes (roots) do not damage or invade underground plumbing and gas lines. And they do not break or crack concrete, or damage foundations. The reason you have barrier is to keep the rhizomes from moving out into your lawn and sending up culms in unwanted places.

Having said that, you may find it hard to locate a running bamboo that likes shade and will get to 35' in your location,
