Black Bamboo in pot

dottyinduncan(z8b coastal BC)July 20, 2013

I can't bring myself to plant Bamboo in the garden, I already have too many thugs. But, since I like Bamboo, I have some in a large planter. Unfortunately, it is now too big for the planter and putting up spikes regularly. Is it possible to divide it? I think it's quite rootbound since I can't get the planter to retain water and a lot of the leaves are looking really dry. I don't know what to do.

Depending on the size of the pot, you can get up to 4 divisions from the bamboo, however, two is more likely.

I use a machete to hack the rootball in two, then replant in larger posts.

Some culms will die from this type of division, but it will not kill the bamboo. Keep watered well.

At what time of the year is it best to do this?

I've done it at all times of the year except the dead of Winter. Just don't let it dry out and don't put it in direct sunlight for long hours after dividing.
