What do Varroa mites look like?

I captured a hive of wild bees in Vancouver, Canada last fall. I have experience with bees in the past. However, I would appreciate it if someone could tell me if I am in trouble. I have seen a lot of small jumping insects on the OUTSIDE hive top of my hive's rescue chamber. They DID look sorta like what I would imagine ticks would look like. I like this strain of bees, they have survived a lot to live to this point in Vancouver, and they are docile, yet industrious. I have been feeding them well. Thanks to anybody willing to help me understand bee problems...

That doesn't sound like varroa mites at all. Lot's of other bugs, beetles and spiders will occupy the space under the top cover of a beehive and do not affect the bees in any way. For more on varroa see the following links:
