Most suitable position for Fargesia Nitida

hulashakerAugust 4, 2010

I"m excited to have this bamboo thrive in my garden. I live in Calgary, AB. Currently it's not planted but could use some imput on the best spot for optimum growth.

If anyone can advise me, I would be most appreciative.

PS. Maybe there's suggestions on wintering it too?

I've never heard of anyone successfully growing bamboo in your Zone. A few folks somehow manage in Zone 4, although all the growth gets top-killed in the winter. F. nitida is very hardy, but it typically dies completely below -20F. I don't know of a winterizing technique for an in-ground bamboo in your Zone that will guarantee it will survive. You best bet may be to have it in a large pot and bring it in over the winter.

F. nitida is not tolerant of high summer temperatures and likes at least partial shade. If you want to see if you can get any other tips about this difficult situation, you may want to re-post this at
