What kind of bee is this?

jmif3March 7, 2008

My fiance tells me it's a bee, or a hornet, and that if it stings you, you're ears will ring; but I don't know. It's huge, I can tell you that. I think it's at least 2 inches long. I've tried searching for it, and it's not a "japanese hornet" or a carpenter bee from what I can tell. I only see a few of them every year, but it's scary. They are an orange color, with an even darker orange/brown butt. They fly like bees do, and from what I can tell of the butt, it comes to a point (to look like a stinger) but I've never been close enough to tell because they scare the crap out of me. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

I have done some looking, and the closest thing I can find about the bee I am talking about is a Male Valley Carpenter Bee. It looks closest to what the bee looks like I am talking about. However, it says Male Valley Carpenter Bees live in Arizona and California, in the Valley. (Hence the name) So I'm still confused.

Sounds like a Vespa crabro or European Hornet.

Perhaps a tarantula hawk? I've heard their sting is unbelievably painful.
