Want a natural barrier...

nicdeluccaAugust 15, 2006

I was hoping to plant bamboo as a natural barrier around my yard...We have no neighbors yet...but sometime, someday we will and I'm hoping that they will see the hard to remove bamboo as a great, natural, privacy fence...What would be the best type of Bamboo to plant???

Most types will provide a pretty good screen. Mostly you have to decide how tall you want it. I like Semiarund fastuosa the best because it's upright and gets to about 15-20 feet. However, it is a runner.

I live in SW Florida...Want it fairly tall...My land is built up about a foot (or more) higher than the lots around me...Will that prevent running???

"SW Florida"

I suggest you get a Bambusa textilis or tuldoides. They are clumpers.

The idea would be to start one clump, then divide it culm by culm and plant the culms along the line of your barrier.

Each culm will produce its own clump.

Unlike some running bamboos that can remain bushy and short for several years, these two Bambusa will size up quickly, giving you 10 ft high culms the first season, 20 ft the second season, 30 ft culms the 3rd season.

And with your long growing season, you'll have good, tall barrier with no problems about containment within a couple years.

Tuldoides has thicker walls so makes more sense in hurricane alley.
