Building native bee houses (for mason bees)

javan(9b n. coastalCA)April 6, 2014

My wife and I have been attempting to encourage the native solitary bee population for several years. Last year's block of drilled wood had 19 mudded in holes over the winter and they all opened up this spring.
We decided to build another set of bee housing (our bee hotel). Here is a photo of my wife drilling the 5/16 inch holes for the bee hotel.Click photo to enlarge and get taken to photobucket.

We mounted the two bee hotels on a structure we made (we try to use nothing but recycled and re-used materials for garden projects). Here is a picture of the short block and cover with bee attractant added.

Finally, here is the finished product with the proud creator. Hotel is open for business!

I'm rolling brown paper bags into Mason Bee Tubes. I haven't chosen a container, yet. But, I'm thinking a plastic ice cream tub with an extra brim to keep rain off. This is my first year, and I don't know whether there are many bees near me or not. I've been developing my native garden for 2+ years, so hopefully I'll have some residents.

Good job! Great pictures. I'm loading all of my trunks, thick stems, and wood blocks into a pallet I can stand up under a roof. We'll see how it goes! All for reusing and repurposing in the garden!
