Removing the Queen's Cage?

Edymnion(7a)May 25, 2013

Hello all,

Just installed my first package of bees yesterday. Pulled the cork on the queen's cage on the candy end so they could eat their way in to her over the next several days, hopefully acclimating to her by the time they get there, etc.

Question is, how long should I wait before removing the empty cage? I know it'll take days for them to free her, and that its generally not a good idea to go messing with the hive at all until they're fully settled in.

I don't see any real problem with just leaving it in there for several months other than the small amount of potential comb space it takes up, but figured I'd better double check just to be sure.

Normally, when you get a package, bees already have accustomed to the pheromones of the queen, no need to let bees free her, this candy thing sometimes is so hard that bees have a hard time to release her, you can open cage and let her go, remove cage, I've always done it without any problem.
Sometimes queen laid eggs within 2 or 3 day's.

Yeah, I just went and opened the hive, they had already chewed through the candy and I didn't see anything in the cage that looked like a queen.

I obviously didn't go yanking frames to try and find her, just removed the empty cage and closed it back up.

I'll assume she's safe and sound in there somewhere.
