Bee & Beehive Identification

lplpo09(5 OH)May 30, 2007

Suddenly this tiny beehive popped up in a maple tree in my backyard. A bee I saw go in it was at least half the hive's height. I don't know if the hive is still in progress, or there are only two bees in there at the moment... which is probably impossible. A bee I saw go in it had a hairless abdomen and a fuzzy, yellow head, as I recall. I didn't get a very good look at it.

Today I caught an insect that looks like a giant yellowjacket, it is over two inches long! I've lived here in southern NJ for 43 years and I had yet to see such a beast until today. Any ideas as to what it could be?

Does anyone know what kind of bee this is? It's less cylindrical than a regular honeybee...it's got....corners. It's more geometric than cylindrical. From Garden and Flowers - 2010

Here is a link that might be useful:

My guess this last one is a bumble bee.
