Garlic

newtoucanSeptember 26, 2012

I've searched on this forum for the garlic mojo thread that was posted a couple months ago and can't find it. I tried it and it was delicious. I think for me the key was baking the garlic in oil instead of frying it. It didn't get bitter.

Anyways, I bought some CA garlic from the store and have refrigerated it for a couple months now. When is the prime time to plant and when is the latest to plant? My problem is that all my summer veggies are still going gangbusters so I don't want to pull those plants out yet. Last year I was picking okra until Christmas. Seems to happen every year and then I miss the winter and spring crops.

Ideal timing is Oct 1 through Nov 1, potentially okay through Dec 15th. The reference I use is the Urban Farm planting calendar. I often have the same problem only in reverse....garlic takes so long to mature, 5 to 7 months, I want the bed before it's ready to harvest. I'll plant a smaller crop this year to alleviate that issue. You may have to sacrifice some okra - or create another bed for the garlic.

I'm planning to put the garlic cloves in between other plants. Any reason that would not be OK?

toucan, I can't find the thread either, but here's the recipe for the garlic mojo. Enjoy. I cooked some tortellini last night and the only dressing I used was the mojo. It was delicious!

Great. Thank you. Does garlic work in pots? How moist to keep the soil? Thats my alternative to getting rid of my current veggies.

Now why didn't I think of that?? Looks like it's a can-do idea. Here's a link to a How To article. That's what I'll do this year. Thanks for the thought. Duh!

They have nice leaves and the scapes are kinda cool - why not put them in a flower bed?
