need identification of bee or wasp

picardyAugust 5, 2008

Hi

I found this little honeycomb today on the side of my house with a few bees or wasps working hard. Can someone please tell me what they are and what I should do about them?

Also, how can I attach a pic that took of them this morning?

Thanks

To post a picture you need a host site. Most of them are free. You sign up, post your pictures there, then copy and paste into the boxes below to create a link to your photo. I use photobucket.com I've given you a link to a good wasp and hornet I.D. site that might help you out. Many wasps and hornets are predators and are helpful in controlling garden pests.

I found a nest under the overhang of my front door. It is a wee bit smaller than a tennis ball and I am quite sure it is not a bumble bee hive. It is grey in colour, and there about 4 wasps/hornets/?? working away. One is a bit larger than the rest. The question I have, is what are they.... they are unlike anything I have seen and cannot find any pics of them on the web. The have a slender body like a wasp but no stripes. Including the head, about 85% of them are black, the only colour is a few dots on the head and about 1 quarter of the tail/end of the body has the same dots, there are DEFINATELY no stripes. The spots are either white or light yellow.... has anyone seen anything like this?
Cheers

This sounds like some kind of paper wasp.
