Black Bees???

sewnjoy(z5 IA)August 15, 2011

I've got black bees with dark red hind ends that are flying very close to the gound. Lots of them!! I've seen them in my butterfly bush & in my tomato plants, but, mostly just flying close to the ground. Any ideas what they are??? I don't think they are wasps or hornets, they're too fast for that! Thanks!

This sounds like some kind of a bumble bee, perhaps you can post a picture?

They have black wings, head, & the front of the body is black. The back side is dark red or brown with one yellow dot on each side. My picture turned out to be a big blurr. Will keep trying, though! I think it's too slender & fast to be a bumble bee. Thanks!

Well, our Black Bees turned out to be Scoliid Wasps! Because they were so fast moving, I didn't think they were wasps. Also found out how benificial they are! We have lots of Japanese beetles & these wasps feed on the grubs! Good deal! Thanks!!!
