Hawk taking a rain bath on the roof

grant_in_arizona(USDA Z9 Scottsdale AZ)September 8, 2013

Hi everyone,

It's been raining pretty hard all day here this morning. I love it! While I was outside adjusting the rain barrel (75 gallons, totally full, yay) I noticed this hawk on the roof taking a nice long rain bath.

It landed with a recent kill (a bird of some sort) that it discreetly tucked on the OTHER side of the peak of the roof while it took a nice, long ten minute rain bath. It was fun to watch it shift and move and fluff and lean to get Full Coverage. Isn't nature great?

I'm not sure what kind of hawk he is--Harris? Red-tail? Either way I thought it was a fun little moment so I thought I'd share a few pics. I hope you'll take a look and enjoy, AND I hope if you need rain you're getting it. This has been an amazingly great monsoon season in my part of town. Amazing.

Happy gardening, Grant

Great pictures! I think Harris Hawk but I could be wrong. I feel like the hawk, I was wandering around in the rain just enjoying it myself too.

Cool! Looks like it recently moulted some tail feathers and new ones are growing in.

It's a Harris's hawk aka Bay-winged hawk. I don't know which name is the correct one currently -- which is why I get frustrated with birding, they keep developing new names faster than new iPhone versions.

Harris hawk ... the dark head and white "underpants" are very distinctive.

He looks like he was enjoying it.

Thanks for looking, commenting, and ID-ing, I appreciate it. I was guessing Harris hawk, but it's good to get confirmation from REAL birders, LOL. I keep an AZ bird guide book right by the back window, but I'm still not great, LOL.

Thanks again. Nature is wonderful isn't it?
Happy gardening!
