Aggressive Bees

blueheron(z6 PA)October 6, 2010

Beside our patio, there is a bee's nest under the foundation of the house. Ordinarily, I wouldn't mind, as I am a gardener and like bees and want them in my garden.

However, there is one bee (I'm assuming it's the same one) who flies around anybody who is on the patio. My daughter was stung as she was going in the house from the patio. Today, I was on the patio and a bee kept hanging around me very closely. I had to go in the house because I was afraid it would sting me. I'm assuming it's protecting its nest?

I'm not sure what kind of bee it is. Do they die in the winter? I will be doing some fall cleanup in the garden soon and I don't know what to do about the bee(s). Any suggestions? I don't like to kill bees.

Honeybees die immediately after stinging (the stinger is barbed and essentially pulls the bee's guts out when they pull away after inserting the barb. So if these are honeybees, the one that stung your daughter never bothered anyone again.

This time of year, yellowjackets get extremely aggressive as they hunt for the last of the nectar. They are also more likely to nest in the ground than honeybees.

If these are yellowjackets and there are not many of them, once you have a hard freeze, I would suggest you seal all of the cracks and holes that are giving the yellowjackets entry to the foundation.

If there are too many to wait or if this is a honeybee colony, get a professional exterminator to remove the insects and nest and then seal the cracks or holes up. With a honeybee nest complete with honey, when you just kill the bees, the honey will just draw other bees.
