bamboo and other plants?

silversword(9A)December 4, 2009

We just planted a giant row of bamboo... We started off with one Bambusa oldhamii followed by alternating Bambusa textilis and Bambusa multiplex 'Alphonse Karr'. Nine plants in all. My question is, what would you plant around them/between them/in front of them?

I use ferns, hostas, Japanese irises, and California poppies. However, if you get a lot of sun, the first two might not work well for you.

I love the poppies, they come up wild in my yard, but they're a bit shaggy looking. I was also considering some asparagus and rhubarb intermixed as I love the idea of edible ornamentals. I think ferns would do ok there, we do get some sun but it would be relatively shady. I'd like a kind of low, bushy something to go behind them and the fence too.

Isn't Nandina invasive?
