size of tuberous begonia tubers

shebobJanuary 22, 2005

I have one tuber (6 years old) that produces enoumous stalks over 3 feet tall, with spectacular, large orange flowers. This fall the tuber was so large that I decided to measure it. It is 9 1/2 inches long, 7 inches wide (at the widest point) and nearly 4 inches thick. Must weigh over one pound. I will have to increase the pot size again this spring in order to hold the bulb. It was given to me as a little seedling 6 years ago and I don't know the exact variety. Can anyone tell me if it is common for the tubers to become so large? Or do I have a freak on my hands?

I have some very large ones I plant in the garden each year too, some are the size of a small dinner plate.
I don't know if they lose their strength/vigour after a time?. I haven't tried to take cuttins of these as I have quite a few named varieties now in the greenhouse.

Is it a single or double? Color??

Does someone care to give us tips on dividing these monsters?

Simply cut the tuber in halfs or quarters. Make sure that each piece has at least one eye (pip). Dust with fungicide after cutting.
