Butterfly bush in Phoenix area?

jaspermplantsOctober 14, 2011

Hello, does anyone grow butterfly bushes in Phoenix area? I found one on sale for $5 at Lowes today and succumbed to buying it. It's a Buddleia davidii. I tried growing a butterfly bush several years ago but it died (I thought from the heat but not sure). However, I regularly walk my dogs at Research Park in Tempe (Elliot and the 101) and they have several butterfly bushes growing in full sun there and they are very healthy.

Anyone have experience with them? I'd love to have one of these bushes in my yard the attract butterflies.

There's some good info in the link below, says they are hardy to zone 10 and they like well draining, loamy soil. Maybe your soil was the problem on the one you lost. Good luck, I love this plant but don't have one - yet.
