Birds eating winter grass seeds

senore100October 3, 2011

Had the winter grass overseeding done over the weekend. This morning when I stepped outside, my gosh, there were around 100 pigeons pecking away on my lawn! What do you guys do to deal with this? Do I just rely on odds (if odds are on my side) that there will be enough left to give a winter lawn??

some people recommend covering the seeds in manure.

I did this when I seeded my bermuda grass this past spring and I rarely saw any pigeons eating my seeds. My neighbor's house (two story house) has hundreds of pigeons always hanging out on their roof every day and I was surprised that they didn't attack my seeds lol

Thanks raimeiken! It looks like my landscaper did compensate for this when he did it. I am already seeing the green coming out vigorously!

Just add 10% more seed...... Bermuda seed is not very desirable to birds.

Just use a topper over your seed- not manure. There's chances of it burning your seed and with regular topper, it protects it from the birds and doesn't leave your yard smelling bad either!

If you want to go out and buy one of those impact sprinklers with a motion detector on it that shoots a back-and-forth of water when it detects motion, you'll not only deter the birds, but you'll be keeping your seeded lawn damp, which is good for it. I wish I could think of the brand name, It might be called a scarecrow, but i'm not 100% sure.
