Scarlet pimpernal root system

katie23August 13, 2009

Looking at photo Ive taken I can see distinct tap root. Yet all literature says fibrous and shallow. There are a number of thicker roots from plant base around the tap root. So for an assignment would I say tap root plus ??

I think it would depend on things like how the assignment was worded and what your options (if given) were. Are you only to report what you see after a certain period of growth?

Well I had classed things for the root section as fibrous, or tap or stolons. Everything I read said fibrous, but when I pulled plant out I could see an obvious tap root plus little fibrous ones round top. I didnt think i could class it as both.

The radicle will develop into a long primary root in both types of root systems. I think what brandon7 is getting at is that those little fibrous ones might eventually give rise to a fibrous root system.

Some plants that normally grow strong taproots when grown from seed, do not have taproots when reproduced vegetative. Acantholinum spp. are a good example.
