Small trees near pool in Phoenix

mary_mary_gardenerNovember 4, 2007

Hi All,

I lost two beautiful small ficus benjamina in last year's freeze. I'm trying to decide what SMALL trees to re-plant near our pool. I'm restricted by power lines on one side and small width (needs to be relatively vertical) on the other.

Exposure is south/west--so will get some intense heat near walls and pool.

The bottlebrush tree was suggested at the nursery (I would LOVE the hummingbirds), but I live in fear of tree debris after having three Australian Bottle Trees near the pool in the past.

Suggestions? Bottle Tree? Ficus Benjamina?

Have you considered Sophora secundiflora ?
(Texas Mountain Laural)

I planted the Aus. Willow near mine. I think they can get rather tall, but not wide & they are weepy.

I think it's from the Dave the Garden Guy site, but there is a whole list of trees that are "pool friendly".

Could you send me the list of trees that are pool friendly? Or direct me to it?
Thanks for the suggestion regarding the Texas Laurel--I'd never heard of it.

Thanks, murmanator, Poolside Plants was a helpful link!
Does anyone have input as far as the Mastic tree (pitacia lentiscus)?
